Wide Chamber Mill

Alpine Contraplex C and CW – wide chamber mill

The Contraplex is a fine impact mill with two driven pin discs. When operated in opposite directions, significantly higher relative speeds are possible than with the UPZ fine impact mill with only one driven pin disc. The greatest relative speed occurs at the outermost rows of pins and reaches up to 250 m/s. The feed material should be brittle and have a maximum Mohs hardness of 3.

  • Pin mill with 2 driven pin discs to achieve high powder fineness in the range of approx. 10 to 500 µm
  • The wide-chamber housing also allows moist, greasy and sticky products to be ground
  • Large mill door that swings open wide

The CW wide chamber housing prevents build-up and blocking of the machine. Compared to the pin disc diameter, the machine housing is oversized. Greasy, oily, sticky, hygroscopic substances etc. that tend to build up can therefore often only be finely comminuted with Contraplex mills in continuous operation or with cleaning intervals that tend to be very long. In addition to the wide chamber housing, the rotation of both pin discs is characteristic, adjustable with different speeds and different directions of rotation. This results in significant application advantages:

  • Large selection  of pins : In addition to the standard head pin made of special steel, there is a large selection of special pins available, with which the highest requirements for hygiene, freedom from wear and tear and freedom from contamination can be met
  • Robust drive solution: The belt drive via standard motors allows the transmission ratio to be optimally designed for the process and the product. This means that the motor and pin disc work at the optimal operating point and the system achieves significantly higher energy efficiency compared to direct drives
  •  Storage: Storage allows preventative maintenance through optimal monitoring of temperature and vibration
  • Higher grinding fineness: The maximum relative speed of both discs is up to approx. 250 m/s, depending on the type. Single-rotor pin, beater, cross-flow, turbo mills, etc. do not reach these high speeds. The Contraplex therefore achieves higher grinding fineness, especially with all brittle, crystalline materials
  • Individual adaptation of the grinding conditions to the material to be ground : The variety of setting parameters from the direction of rotation and speed pairing ensures the optimum grinding fineness, gentle treatment, freedom from attachment of the pin discs, etc. for every product – especially those that are sensitive to heat
  • Intensive, agglomerate-free and homogeneous mixed grinding for products  consisting of two or more components (food technology)
  • Trouble-free continuous operation: Substances that cannot be ground in sieve mills due to clogging of the sieve – especially with fine perforations – can also be comminuted to a high degree of fineness. Air supplied prevents regrind from penetrating into the bearing and depositing of regrind behind the pin discs

Possible Applications

  • Mineral flours: calcium carbonate, fillers, calcium hydroxide, coating of fillers with stearic acid, silane, etc
  • Pharma: vitamins, pharmaceutical additives
  • Food: Fatty proteins, spices (nutmeg, cloves, pepper, etc.) Digestion of flour for protein shift, corn starch, lactose, cocoa, fish meal
  • Chemistry: Plastic fine grinding (e.g. TPU, PA), pesticides, hydrotalcite, pigments (e.g. ultramarine blue), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)
  • Recycling: rubber fine grinding
